United State HIV/AIDS Statistics by State
At the end of 2003, an estimated 395,317 people were
living with AIDS in the 50 states of the USA and the District of
Columbia. The highest numbers are in California, Florida, New York
and Texas.
In the 33 states which have a history of
confidential HIV reporting, an estimated 174,396 people were living
with HIV that had not progressed to AIDS. According to the number of
AIDS cases reported to the CDC, these 33 areas represent
approximately 43% of the US epidemic. The total number of people
living with HIV (not AIDS) in the USA must therefore be much higher.

The latest statistics on AIDS & HIV in the USA were
published in December 2004 by the US Department of Health and Human
Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The next
data are due December 2005.
There is often a delay between the time of diagnosis
of HIV or AIDS, or the time of death, and the time at which the
event is reported. For this reason the CDC estimates the number of
people living with HIV or AIDS by adjusting for reporting delays. No
adjustment is made for incomplete reporting. On this page, all
numbers are CDC estimates.
These HIV figures include only those states with
confidential HIV reporting. Since there are no individual laws
requiring states to report cases of HIV infection, there are some
blank spaces in the table. More states are implementing such
reporting in response to the changing epidemic and the need for
information on persons with HIV infection. It is hoped that all
states will be reporting cases to the CDC in the near future.
On this page "adults and adolescents" are defined as
persons aged 13 years or more. |
